John 21:9-17 New International Version (NIV)
When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
in Greek there are lots of words love translates into Jesus uses the word agape, peter uses the word Philia, below are the meaning of these words.
(v. 15) “When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you truly love [“Agápe”] Me more than these [disciples]? ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love [“Philia] you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed My lambs.’
Agape Love is a Sacrificial love that is Committed To Serve Others
Agápe means “love: esp. brotherly love, charity; the love of God for man and of man for God
Philia means “affectionate regard, friendship,” usually “between equals.”
some people think that these in the sentence “do you love me more then these” refers to the other disciples, it may be I don’t know, but Jesus was next to a boat with nets and the rest of the fish peter caught, these maybe what Jesus was next to, the boat, nets and fish, etc. another thing interesting about this passage Peter was regarding Jesus as a equal, but Jesus is God, yes he is our friend but he is god and should be respected, he is the perfect role model for our lives, the servant king.
Jesus was asking peter, do you love God and people as much as what he did as a job, as much as what he owned, fish was how Peter made money, Jesus was asking peter to serve people and minister to them and bring Jesus to a hurting lost world, he was asking Peter to evaluate what he sent his time doing.
Jesus is asking us to look after people and be Jesus to them. We need to come out of our comfort zone, we need to go with the spirit and allow Jesus to lead us, Jesus was asking peter to come out his comfort zone, and be lead by him and minister to a hurting, lost world, and he is asking us to do the same.
